Australian Surf Brand Founded at 14 — The Pure Surf Story

There's a moment every surfer knows. You paddle out, catch a wave, and for a few seconds everything else disappears. For most people, that's where it ends. For Troy, it was just the beginning.

At 14 years old, growing up in Melbourne with a love for the ocean and the Bells Beach lineup, Troy founded Pure Surf — an Australian surf apparel brand built from scratch, with no investors, no backing, and no blueprint. Just a vision for what Australian surf culture could look like for the next generation.

Starting From Zero on the Aussie Coast

Pure Surf didn't start in a boardroom. It started with a kid who was stoked on surfing and frustrated that the brands he loved didn't feel like they were made for him — or for the generation of surfers coming up behind him.

Troy wanted something raw, authentic, and Australian. A brand that felt like the coast. That felt like early mornings on the beach, offshore winds, and the kind of sessions that nobody films but everyone remembers.

So he built it.

Pure Surf launched as a limited-drop surf apparel brand, targeting Gen Z surfers aged 15–25 across Australia and internationally. The brand identity was clear from day one: vintage-meets-modern, founded on the Aussie coast, and built for people who actually surf.

What Pure Surf Stands For

Pure Surf isn't just a clothing brand. It's a movement built around three things:

The Founder Story. Every piece of Pure Surf gear carries the story of a 14-year-old who backed himself when nobody else did. That authenticity is woven into everything — the designs, the drops, the community.

Limited Drops. Pure Surf operates on a limited-drop model. Each collection is released in small quantities, creating genuine demand and making every piece feel special. When a drop goes live, it sells out. That's not a marketing trick — it's just how Pure Surf operates.

Cleaning Australian Coastlines. The ocean gives surfers everything. Pure Surf gives something back. Every order placed with Pure Surf contributes to cleaning Australian coastlines — because the brands surfers support should be the ones protecting the places they surf.

Growing From the Ground Up

Since launching, Pure Surf has grown into a brand with thousands of followers across Instagram and TikTok, a global customer base shipping worldwide, and a community of surfers who genuinely connect with what the brand represents.

The ambassador program has taken off — surfers from across Australia reaching out to rep the brand they feel is actually theirs. Not a corporate surf label. Not a brand run by suits. A brand founded by a surfer, for surfers.

Troy has been recognised for his work with the Yarra Ranges Youth Young Entrepreneur Award and as a National Finalist in the Edstart Innovation & Entrepreneurship Award — recognition that building something real at a young age is possible, and worth doing.

What's Next for Pure Surf

Pure Surf isn't slowing down. With new collections dropping throughout 2026 — including the Offshore Collection, unisex surf knits, and a summer drop — the brand is growing with every release.

The mission stays the same: create gear that genuine surfers want to wear, build a community around Australian surf culture, and do it in a way that gives back to the coastlines that made it all possible.

If you're a surfer who's been sleeping on Pure Surf, now's the time to get around it.
